POSCA

POSCA water-based paint markers can be used on almost any surface, and are loved by professional artists, creative hobbyists, and amateurs alike for all types of creation and self-expression.

Versatile Tips & Sizes

POSCA’s 11 marker products come in 10 tip sizes and 7 unique shapes—from the calibrated point of the PC-1MR to the broad round tip of the PCM-22.

With 71 colors—including metallic, fluorescent, and glitter hues—POSCA artists enjoy nearly unlimited expression.

Water-soluble, Quick-drying & Non-toxic

POSCA is mixable, layerable, and multi-surface—suitable for plastic, wood, cardboard, paper, glass, textile, and more.

71 Colors

POSCA paint markers are available in a range of vibrant colors including metallic, fluorescent, and glitter hues.

Water-soluble

POSCA paint is highly blendable and water-soluble. It can be diluted to produce a gradient effect. Simply add water to your creation with a wet paintbrush to blend or dilute for a transparent effect.

Mixable

As long as the paint is wet, colors can be mixed on the work surface with the tip or a brush to create smooth gradations of color. If the tip is stained, simply rinse it with water and re-prime the marker to restore the initial color.

Layerable

Dense and opaque, POSCA paint is ideal for layering. Dark colors can be applied over light colors or light colors over dark. Thanks to its fast drying time, layering can be carried out with no smudges. Several coats may be needed to apply light colors over dark.

The Creative Tool With No Limits

The Tip

The Tip

The POSCA range includes no fewer than 11 sizes and seven different tip shapes. Made either of acrylic or plastic, they are all ultra-hardwearing and perfectly suited to their respective uses. The very high quality of the materials used guarantees a stroke that is always perfectly smooth. The line is regular, the action is unique, and the pleasure of creating with POSCA is unparalleled.

The Valve Mechanism

The Valve Mechanism

Developed by uni Brands parent company Mitsubishi Pencil Company, POSCA’s unique valve mechanism guarantees a perfect seal for the marker and conserves the paint over time. The same mechanism is used to prime the POSCA for use and to re-saturate the tip as often as necessary during creation.

The Paint

The Paint

Very rich in pigments, POSCA paint provides results with incomparable density. POSCA paint’s unique water-based formulation delivers bright, matte, opaque colors that withstand the passage of time. It’s odorless, layerable, mixable, water-soluble, weather-resistant and—with no fewer than 71 colors (some with glitter, metallic or fluorescent)—offers unlimited creative possibilities.

The Ball

The Ball

You can tell a POSCA by its look, its feel, but also its distinctive sound. To ensure a consistent texture from beginning to end, a little ball is placed inside the marker to mix the ingredients of the POSCA paint. Just shake the marker energetically (with the cap on!), and you will hear the ball’s characteristic, sought-after clicking—the sound signature of a POSCA marker in the hand of an artist at work.

Multi-surface

POSCA markers have been tested and proven on over 50 surfaces including canvas, metal, surfboards, and rocks! POSCA markers are a tool for expressing one’s creativity in virtually any way imaginable.

Wood

Wood is an ideal complement for POSCA, whether rough or polished, for inspired creations both indoors and outdoors. Apply two coats of water-based spray varnish to finish.

Fabric & Textiles

POSCA makes it easy to customize everyday materials to express your personal style. When dry, spray with varnish or use an iron to set.

Glass

Use POSCA on glass to gain new depth and luminosity. Paint can be washed off glass surfaces with water whenever you want to start again. Or make your creation permanent by curing your painted surface in an oven for up to 45 minutes at 320°F.

Ceramic

POSCA is ideally suited to creativity with all ceramics. Designs will be temporary if the ceramic is treated (e.g., glazed porcelain) or permanent otherwise (e.g., terra cotta). Spray with varnish to increase longevity.

Paper & Cardboard

Create almost anything with some cardboard and a little imagination. POSCA paint markers are perfect for layering thick, opaque color. The paint adheres perfectly and permanently.

Plastic

POSCA paint adheres perfectly to plastic, enabling the most original creations without frustration. Apply two coats of spray varnish to set.

Metals

POSCA adheres very well to metals such as iron or aluminum. The color will be permanent on rough or porous metals and erasable on perfectly smooth metals. Apply two or three coats of varnish to protect your creation.

Stone & Porous Rock

No surprise—POSCA rocks! After working on a clean, dry surface, apply two to four coats of spray varnish to finish.

Canvas

POSCA is intrinsically compatible with this ever popular medium, creating immediately permanent results. To increase longevity, apply water-based spray varnish.

What can I use POSCA markers on?

POSCA markers have been tested for use on over 50 surfaces including canvas, metal, surfboards, rocks and so much more. POSCA markers are a tool for expressing one’s creativity in virtually any way imaginable.

How many tip sizes and colors are there?

POSCA paint markers come in 10 different tip sizes, 7 unique shapes, and 71 colors for a multitude of uses. Explore the full range.

What kind of paint is used in POSCA markers?

POSCA markers contain high quality water-based acrylic paint made in Japan. The paint is highly opaque, quick drying and blendable when wet.

Is POSCA paint non-toxic?

Yes. POSCA’s paint is water-based, odorless, made without alcohol or solvents and ACMI certified. In fact, POSCA is so safe that beekeepers use POSCA markers to identify the queen in beehives. A color corresponds to each year which enables them to determine the insect’s age.

Can POSCA markers be used on skin?

POSCA markers have not been tested or certified for cosmetic use. However the paint can easily be removed with soap and water if it comes into contact with skin.

Is POSCA paint permanent?

POSCA markers use water-based paint with stable pigments that can be applied to all materials. POSCA paint is permanent on porous surfaces, such as wood, cardboard, and textiles, and removable on smooth, non-porous surfaces, such as glass, plastic or metal. Depending on the surface, there are ways to optimize permanence including: applying a varnish; baking in the oven; ironing the surface; or adding a fixative to prevent dust or damage over time. You can read more about the use of POSCA markers on various surfaces on the page above.

How do I initiate/re-initiate my POSCA?

This process is known as “priming”. Firmly shake your marker, with the cap tightly closed to allow the ball inside to mix and homogenize the paint within. For most markers, press the tip on a piece of paper several times until it is saturated paint. For the PCF-350 brush marker, remove the cap and the pushbutton protection at the other end of the marker. Press the pushbutton several times until the paint saturates the tip. Remember to put the cap back on after use! Prime your POSCA on initial use or after leaving your marker unused for any length of time.

How do I avoid paint flooding?

With many paint markers, when the nib is pushed down to initiate paint flow, an excess amount of paint comes out, referred to as “flooding the nib”. POSCA markers have a valve and piston mechanism that reduces bleeding. To control the flow, press down on scrap paper when priming POSCA.

How do I blend colors?

Create your own custom colors by mixing the paint from different markers directly on the surface while the paint is wet. If your nib shows the blended color, simply rinse with water to clean.

How do I overlay colors?

Opaque and dense, POSCA’s paint dries quickly, allowing you to cover a layer with another one once the initial coat is dry.

How long does it take for the paint to dry?

Depending on thickness of application, the paint usually dries within a few minutes, especially outside or in drier environments. In general the paint dries faster on porous surfaces than on non-porous surfaces.

How do I correct a mistake?

On smooth surfaces like glass, simply use a moist rag to “erase”. On porous surfaces where the POSCA paint is permanent, wait until the paint is dry, then overlay with another color as much as you like.

My tip is dry or dirty—what can I do?

Thanks to the marker’s piston mechanism and valve system, dirt or debris on the tip will not penetrate the main paint compartment, and a dry tip can easily be re-saturated with paint. Some tips can be removed and rinsed in water. In the case of non removable tips, soak them directly in water.

How do I preserve/store my markers?

POSCA markers can be kept in any position as long as the cap is put back on firmly after use. Indeed, the ball inside can be used at any time to remix the paint, which is itself preserved in the body of the marker (hermetically sealed thanks to the integrated valve). We recommend storing the POSCA brush marker in a horizontal position.

Can I refill POSCA markers with more paint?

POSCA markers are not refillable, but if your marker no longer works, it doesn’t mean it’s empty. Try moistening the tip, then re-initiate, as a tip that is too dry can prevent paint flow.
